2001: A Rock Odyssey
Rock must be in really bad shape if the only straight up rock record that sold in 2001 was Weathered by holy rollers Creed, right? Wrong. Believe it or not some great rock records did come out this year. Above is my list of my favorites. And for the record: Nü Metal and MallCore don't count as rock - and even if they did that sound was played out back in '99.

By the way, which one's Clem?
Not a person, a band. On Clem Snide's 3rd album Ghost of Fashion, Eef Barzelay proves he is one of the most talented songwriters of his generation. Barzelay has an amazing gift for capturing life's intimate moments and turning them in powerful often moving snapshots of people's lives. The songwriting is only half of what makes Ghost of Fashion an extraordinary album. Like Elvis Costello's best work, each song here is masterfully arranged with lots of attention to every detail. Barzelay's lazy drawl vocal delivery (sounding at times like a young Michael Stipe) holds together the quiet acoustic guitar driven ballads and the big horn and string filled numbers. Pretty boy sensation Ryan Adams may be the one dating klepto Winona Ryder, but in this writer's opinion Clem Snide stole the show in 2001 with this exceptional record.

The Greatest Band In The World
Comedy, Metal, Prog Rock - Tenacious D is all of these things and more. Their self-titled debut is more than a novelty album, it blurs the line between parody and reality and really deserves a category all its own. As with Spinal Tap before them, these tunes are not only funny, they are also really good songs. With support from Dave Grohl on drums and Trey Anastasio on guitar, this album will rock your friggin' socks off. After Sept. 11 when no one knew if it was alright to laugh again, this album made me laugh my ass off. God Bless The D and Hail Satan!

The next big thing
Are the Strokes or the White Stripes gonna save rock 'n' roll? Probably not. Are they gonna save me from watching that awful Alien Ant Farm video again? I hope so. Both bands write excellent songs and draw inspiration from some great bands of the past. The Strokes' Is This It? is far and away the best debut record to come out this year. The White Stripes' stayed true to their raw and edgy sound on White Blood Cells and are actually making Blues music seem cool again.

Fright Night?
The classic rock undead continued to haunt the rock and roll landscape in 2001. Witchy woman Stevie Nicks and zombie Mick Jagger tried to invigorate theirs careers by sucking on the blood of the young - enlisting Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, and the fat bastard from Matchbox 20 to give some life to their solo records. It didn't work. Somebody get hired-gun songwriter Diane Warren some scarves and a sparkly jacket so she can officially join Aerosmith on their "Tainting The Memory" tour. Fortunately, two old-timers - Zimmy and the Boss - are still producing top notch work. Dylan's Love and Theft is an even better record then the brilliant Time Out of Mind. Springsteen's reunion with the E Street Band finally produced a live album that captured the magic of his incredible live show. Honorable mention in the geezer category goes to the Clash's Joe Strummer and Texas legend Alejandro Escovedo who also released great records this year.

Don't Let Me Down
2001 had it share of disappointing new releases. Weezer's green album wasn't bad, but kinda short and definitely not worth the 5 year wait (have you heard Mary Kate and Ashley's "Island In The Sun?" In a word, awesome.) Across the pond, Travis produced another solid record, but the band didn't evolve like I hoped they would. On Amnesiac, Radiohead seem to be evolving in a boring direction. R.E.M.'s Reveal was a better record than Up but that's not saying much. The self-titled solo debut from Stephen Malkmus was one of this year's pleasant surprises. He recaptured some of the Pavement magic with an album full of great pop hooks and smarmy lyrics including a fantastic salute to Yul Brynner.

Rusty Cage and A Long December
I never realized how good Alice In Chains were until Creed, Nickelback and Staind started recycling Grunge in the worst way possible. The formula = life is so hard for me lyric + mopey verse + really angry chorus x grainy video with a pouty model = big hit! I never realized how good the Counting Crows were until Train and Five For Fighting started copping their sound.

Great albums that were great imports last year so don't qualify in my book
Clinic's Internal Wrangler and Sigur Rós' Agætis Byrjun.

Looking Forward To In 2002
New records from And They Will Know Us By the Trail Of Dead, Elvis Costello, and Luna.
