He was more than just a leader. He wanted to be human, he didn't want to die. They actually were androids, not really robots. Androids (AI) are composed of robot parts *and* organic (human, sometimes) parts. Robots are *only* robots, no human. There are aslo golems, which are made of clay, and then things like Frankenstin, who was just made of human parts.
All the androids (called replicants in the book & movie) in Blade Runner had a lifespan (of four years i believe). After those four years they were programmed to die, in reality just stop working. They were slaves to humans. Roy and his "crew" escaped from their "owners" in space and headed to Earth. Once there people hunted and eliminated them.
If you like serious science fiction that will make you think, I suggest reading the book Blade Runner was based on. It's called "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" The book is by Phillip K. Dick and is an excellet read. There are two versions of the movie. I suggest watching the regular one first. The other version is called the director's cut. You miss a lot if you watch that one first.
The main human in the movie is Deckard and is played by the wonderful and amazing Harrison Ford. Blade Runner is not for the casual sci-fi fan. It is both a fantastic read and a excellent movie. (I did my senior thesis on aritical humans and used BR in my text.)
